With the treatment system and wetlands completed, AMD&ART turned its full attention to the proposed recreation area in recent years. Today, the Vintondale AMD&ART Park has a new multi-purpose, four-acre recreational area that is capable of hosting soccer, baseball, football, and many other outdoor games. Closely reflecting the aspirations of the very first design meetings with the community, the park is rapidly becoming the new social center of Vintondale, bringing new pride and new activity to the community. The new access road, a major accomplishment, opens access not only to the park but to funding sources that were unwilling to support recreational development until access was provided. These same funding sources were also unwilling to fund access — a typical challenge for AMD&ART and all other non-traditional projects. With financial and in-kind contributions from our funders and partners, the recreation area has given the community a new/old place to gather and host sporting events for people of all ages. Completed in June 2005 and the largest in-kind donation in the history of the AMD&ART park, this new road makes it possible for the community to utilize and expand their AMD&ART park.

Access Road

It wasn't done with a grant, but the construction of the access road was the single largest hurdle to full development of the Recreation Area. We worked with many community folks to get past several bottlenecks and in the end it was a local mining company that brought in their equipment and operators while we paid for the materials and made the whole thing happen in a remarkably short period of time.

Funding
Funding for this part of the Vintondale AMD&ART Remediation System came from the funding sources noted in the documents below.
  • Pavilion Grant and Navy Construction Battalion Assistance 2000–2001 PDF | Word

We received funds from the USFS for wood products, and construction assistance from the local Navy Seabee Battalion to build it, creating a primary community asset in the park.
